Abstract

The 9th March, 2019 Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections in Nigeria have come and gone, but the electoral violence that characterized the said elections is still fresh in our minds. During the said elections, the member of the House of Representative from Lagelu/Akinyele (Oyo State) Temitope Olatoye was shot dead by suspected thugs. He was one of the 13 Nigerians that lost their lives in the violence sparked by the elections in some parts of the country. This development brings to the fore the issue of electoral violence on our journey to democracy. This paper examines the incidences, causes and effects of electoral violence and its corresponding effects to our democracy with particular reference to the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections held in Nigeria on 9th March, 2019.
