IMPACT OF MOBILE DEVICES ON STUDENTS’ LEARNING ENGAGEMENT AND MOTIVATION IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN THE ASABA URBAN AREA OF DELTA STATE
Abstract
This study examined the impact of mobile devices on students’ learning
engagement and motivation in secondary schools in the Asaba urban area
of Delta State. Five research questions were raised to guide the study. The
study adopted survey research design. The population of the study was
secondary school students. Simple random sampling technique was used
to obtain 200 respondents used for the study. The instrument for data
collection was a structured questionnaire rated on a 4-point scale. The
instrument was validated by experts for face and content validity. The
reliability of the instrument was obtained using split-half method. The
copies of the validated questionnaire were given to students in Okpanam
mixed secondary school selected for the pilot study and split into two. The
data collected was analysed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation
(r) to ascertain the reliability of the instrument. A reliability coefficient of
0.75 was obtained. A total of two hundred (200) copies of questionnaire
were administered to the respondents. Data collected from the study were
analysed using descriptive statistics of mean and standard deviation. From
the data collected and analysed, the findings of the study revealed that
mobile devices help students learning engagement and motivation in
secondary schools in the Asaba urban area of Delta State. It gives more
understanding and exchange of knowledge and interactions with some
teaching apps that improves their learning. Recommendations were made
to federal government, state governments, local governments and
individuals.
