Deconstructing Contemporary Discourses on Ògbòmà Witchcraft: A Critical Examination of Igbo Societal Perspectives

Abstract

Ògbòmà’ (witchcraft) occupies a pivotal role in the cultural beliefs of the Igbo people, eliciting curiosity, fear, and widespread misconceptions among scholars and the public. This study examines Igbo perspectives on the beliefs, practices, and social implications of witchcraft, highlighting its enduring significance and impact on individuals and communities. Using an analytical survey research design and quantitative data collection, the study gathers insights through a structured questionnaire. The findings reveal the nature of witchcraft in Igbo culture, promoting cultural understanding while addressing the stigma faced by accused individuals. It fosters informed discussions, dispelling misconceptions and encouraging sensitivity toward traditional beliefs.
