The Role of Religious Institutions in Electoral Politics in Nigeria
Abstract
Religious institutions have historically played a significant role in shaping political narratives and behavior in Nigeria. This article explores the multifaceted influence of religious organizations on electoral politics, examining how they mobilize voters, endorse candidates, and shape political discourse. Drawing from qualitative and quantitative data, the study assesses both the positive and negative consequences of religious involvement in politics. It finds that while religious institutions often serve as vehicles for political awareness and civic engagement, their partisanship can exacerbate sectarian tensions and compromise democratic principles. Recommendations are made for fostering a balanced relationship between religion and politics in Nigeria.
