Knowledge Shall Increase: A Re-reading of Daniel 12:4 in the Context of Artificial Intelligence and Its Implications for Nigerian Society

Abstract

The increase of knowledge has long been a subject of theological interest, particularly in biblical prophecy such as Daniel 12:4, which foretells a time when “many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase.” This study explored the relevance of this prophetic declaration in light of modern technological advancement, particularly the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) in Nigeria. In biblical tradition, the concept of knowledge particularly the Hebrew term daʿat signifies a form of divine knowledge shaped by spiritual discernment and a reverent relationship with God. However, in today’s technological age, knowledge has shifted towards data driven understanding, often separated from divine wisdom. The study adopted exegetical methodology to explore the original meaning of the biblical term “knowledge shall increase’’. While AI has contributed to national development in areas like education, healthcare, and digital finance, it has also raised ethical, spiritual, and social concerns. The study further draws attention to similar predictions within indigenous African traditions, notably the Odu Ifá corpus, which also foretell a time of widespread knowledge and its attendant responsibilities. The study underscores the importance of aligning technological development with moral consciousness and spiritual accountability. This study concluded that the prophecy of Daniel 12:4 remains relevant, not only as a biblical prediction but as a present-day challenge for Nigeria to harmonize innovation with the fear of God. The study recommended that Nigeria approach the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) with both caution and purpose.
