Faith, Freedom, and Justice: The Role of Religion in the Promotion of Human Rights

Abstract

Religion has played a major role in the promotion and violation of human rights. Even though both religious heritage and intolerance are interwoven, religion also helps in the aspect of promoting both freedom and justice. This paper, therefore, explores how religion helps foster human rights as well as how fundamental freedoms are safeguarded by faith. The paper adopts a qualitative research methodology and interdisciplinary approach; it makes use of textual analysis of theological sources, human rights instruments, and literature in religious ethics and social theory, particularly on theological ethics and human rights. The paper also examines the principles of religion, which include sanctity of life, justice, and freedom of conscience, among others, coexisting with universal human rights. Attention is given to tensions between religious authority and individual rights, as well as the role of religious institutions in peace-making and social justice movements. This paper asserts that religion remains an effective tool in promoting human rights, especially within diverse societies; it also advocates for dialogue between religious communities and legal frameworks to protect human rights in the world.
