Religious Engineering: Exploring Christian Tradition of Works of Mercy for a Transformative Project on Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
Abstract
Gender-based violence (GBV) is a human development issue which threatens human rights globally as well as raises public health concerns. This research explores how to create a transformative project to address gender-based violence (GBV) from a Christian perspective, leveraging the Christian tradition of works of mercy. It draws an insight from utilising the traditional works of mercy lens to promote an “ethic of care” to help survivors. The study adopts a structured observational design and a qualitative open-ended online survey to assess the current state of GBV in the research area and the Christian religious responses to these cases, to promote shared understanding and actions that can help reduce the incidence of GBV. 81 participants were recorded in the structured observation, while 12 participants responded to the Google online survey. The research suggests avenues for further research and practical implementation.
