AYEI: AN INSTRUMENT FOR SETTLEMENT OF CONFLICT IN IBIBIO TRADITIONAL SOCIETY

Abstract

This paper x-rays, Ayei as a traditional instrument employed by the Ibibio traditional society for settlement of conflict. It represents peace, settlement and conflict resolution. In Ibibio traditional society, Ayei is a symbol of unity, harmony, and reconciliation. When conflict arises, the Ayei symbol is often used to resolve disputes and restore peace among individuals, families, or communities. It is typically represented by a palm frond. The Ibibio people have a rich cultural heritage with various symbol and practices for maintaining social harmony and forgiveness, and the willingness to move past disputes. This paper will investigate the underlying principles and value that guide Ayei proceedings, such as communal harmony, restoration of relationships and the pursuit of fairness and equity. It explores how these principles are manifested in the rituals, ceremonies, and symbolic gestures that characterize Ayei sessions. This paper also reflects on the implications of preserving and revitalizing Ayei as a traditional conflict resolution mechanism in the face of modern legal systems and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms. The paper adopts sociological approach. It underscores the importance of recognizing and respecting indigenous systems of justice while exploiting opportunities for synergy and collaboration between Ayei and formal legal institution. This work contributes to a deeper understanding of Ayei as a dynamic and resilient instrument for conflict resolution.
