LEGAL AND INSTITUTIONAL FRAMEWORK FOR PROTECTION OF RIGHTS OF WOMEN IN NIGERIA, SOUTH AFRICA AND UNITED KINGDOM
Abstract
Protection of rights of women are the legal and moral means of protecting the rights that are entitled to women. It is effort put forward through the law to protect and promote the women’s rights such as rights to privacy, property, fair treatment, and freedom from discrimination, abuse, or exploitation, rights to access information, participate in decision-making processes, and seek legal remedies when rights are violated. This study deals with legal and institutional framework for protection of rights of women in Nigeria, South Africa and United Kingdom. The methodology employed in the study was doctrinal analysis. The publications documented in Nigeria, South and United Kingdom were used as the sources of analysis. The study found that majority of studies analyzed lack comparative methodology. Only very few of the studies used comparative approach. The study concluded that majorly majority of the studies analyzed were based on exploratory techniques which could not compare the practices across countries of the globe, therefore limiting the findings and scope of coverage. The study recommended that gender issues in Nigeria and South Africa should not be a disadvantage, the law must enforce this and bring erring men to book. As such, the need for the legislative institutions to take urgent and concrete steps to curb abuse of women’s rights in Nigeria and South Africa
